“If you allow your spontaneity its own freedom then you can quite happily have whatever you want. It will lead you to thoughts of love for others. Upon the degree to which this is done rests the power and coherence of everything that is.”

And fulfilling it with nature automatically fulfills your purposes, and, in your terms, your responsibility.

If you are the self that you are, you use your abilities out of joy. When you use your abilities out of responsibilities, you distort them. You help because you think you should, not because it is a joyful part of your being. And, you begin to ask: ‘who needs my help most?’

Can you imagine the sun thinking, ‘who needs my help most? Should I send forth my rays upon this flower or that one? Which flower needs my help most?’ Or the rain saying, ‘who needs my help most?’

No! The sun is itself as you are yourself, and through your being you bless yourself and all others. Being yourself, you can trust yourself, and your responsibilities are automatically fulfilled. But, if you do not trust yourself, there is no responsibility that you can fulfill, and no one you can truly help.”

“To close your eyes to them (dire circumstances) in an ignorant fashion, to wash your hands of them, so to speak, is shortsighted. To pretend such situations do not exist out of fear of them, will only bring the feared reality closer. It is far better to situate yourself firmly in your own reality, acknowledge it as your own, encourage your strength and creativity, and from that vantage point view those areas of the world or of your own society that need constructive help. Purposefully in your own life, in your daily dialogues with others, in your relationships through your groups or clubs, reinforce as well as you can the strength and abilities of others.

That reinforcement will add to the personal power of all other individuals with whom those people come in contact.

If you want to change the world for the better, and if you are determined to do so, no matter what the risk, and if you believe that those ends justify any means at your disposal, then you are a fanatic.

There is nothing more stimulating, or more worthy of actualization, than the desire to change the world for the better. That is indeed each person’s mission. You begin by working in that area of activity that is your own unique one, with your own life and activities. You begin in the corner of an office, or on the assembly line, or in the advertising agency, or in the kitchen. You begin where you are.”

Man’s vulnerability to pain helps him sympathize with others, and therefore helps him to more actively alleviate whatever unnecessary causes of pain exist in society.

Each person’s experience of a painful nature is also registered on the part of what we will call the world’s mind. Each failure, disappointment, or unresolved problem that results in suffering becomes a part of the world’s experience. It learns that this way or that way does not work, or this way or that way has been tried with poor results. So in that way, even weaknesses or failures of suffering are resolved, or rather redeemed as adjustments are made in the light of that data.

In that regard, each person lives his or her life privately and, yet, for all of humanity. Each person tries out new challenges, new circumstances, new achievements from a unique viewpoint, for himself or herself, and for the entire mass of humanity as well.”

Now, I will tell you a children’s tale. Once upon a merry time, on a distant star, there lived a fine people. They were not physical people, in your terms, and, if you traveled to that star now in your spaceships, you would not see them. You would walk through the fields and think that the land was barren. You would land in your spaceships and, though the whole populace came out to greet you, you would see no one.

In this very, very distant time, these people, who were very gifted and are still very gifted–these people had a dream. They were, in a strange way, mathematicians and scientists, but in a way that had nothing to do with physical space or physical theories. Out of their great power, they imagined a dimension of reality in which there were trees and fields and physical beings with physical bodies; skies that were blue; and water that fell down from the sky. They did this out of their great creativity and from themselves because, in your terms, they were a race of gods.

They conceived a dimension of reality in which these things would, indeed, exist, and from themselves they sent out portions of their own entity and consciousness. When I say they did this, I mean that they did it joyfully and with a great exuberance. Yet, also, they felt this portion of their own consciousness leave them and escape from them. So, to some extent, they cried to see a portion of themselves forever leave. Yet they did this that you might have existence and song.

And so, in this children’s tale that is given to you in parable and in symbol, you came to have your being. Yet when this universe as you know it was then brought into existence, you had to forget momentarily where you came from and you had to be created in flesh so that you could experience, in flesh, this new portion of creativity and so that you could, in your turn, create from that of which you were physically made.

So on purpose in a way, you forgot your heritage, and you found yourself upon a physical planet. All the stars blazed, and you opened your eyes and found infinite possibilities and a virgin physical reality that you could shape to your heart’s desire and in which you could give your creativity full rein. Those from whom you originated watched and, when great clouds scurried across your primitive skies in those days, the ones who had originated you came down, and you saw them and wondered.

And in this children’s tale, there were also, behind those who originated you, others who also watched carefully and gently and with great love. For, as you were created, so you create. Those thoughts of yours that you consider meaningless and that escape from you, these are also given vitality and existence, for you cannot help but create even as you have been created.

Now in this children’s tale, pretend with me. Pretend with me that you sit here in a physical reality in one tiny, unspeakably, and unutterably small dot upon the physical planet called Earth. Pretend with me that you are presently sitting in a room in a town called Elmira in a state called New York. That you are seated in a circle and that you are listening to me speak.

And pretend with me that, at the same time, you are in a circle about me in another space and another time. Pretend with me that, in your terms, we were in another circle and another star in a past so inconceivably distant that your physical brain cannot imagine it, and that together, being non-physical, we had a great dream, imagined a physical reality, and we imagined this moment and this time. There is no end to this children’s tale.

There is never any end to a children’s tale. It is only adults who insist upon beginnings and endings. Imagine also, therefore, that within yourselves now are other, far wiser selves and that within your eyes are other eyes as old as mine and other selves quite as ancient and quite as new, and that these selves, within yourselves, look out at me and wink, and in winking, know what they know.

Ruth, a class participant, said she was surprised to see Seth smiling.

Seth: It is within my rights. You have civil rights; I have smiling rights.

Now, I am glad you liked my children’s tale. I do want to give our friend (Jane) more of a break, but let me tell you that, in my own book, Seth Speaks – the Eternal Validity of the Soul, I am not using children’s tales. You have been given children’s tales too often. They are lovely and there is meaning in them, and you here should understand the meaning of the tale I gave you. But beneath the stories of the beginning, there are other things that you should know. In my own book, I will tell you what they are.

Now I have several things to say, and we will try to answer questions that you have in mind.

First of all, (to Rob) do not lose your sense of perspective, that larger perspective, that our work should give you. You are also involved in other realities and other experiments. There is more, and there are trends now in your own reality that you do not see.

Not only this, but even if the race as you know it distorts itself beyond belief, or even destroys itself, the many will not forget. The knowledge, hard won, would be as instinct when the race began again. The losers then would become
stern teachers, having learned through experience.

Each experiment is a success, regardless of whether it succeeds or fails in your terms, and each experiment also brings with it new elements of creativity, new innovations having appeared. These are retained.

There are various levels all operating, various levels of consciousness and identity. They cannot be forcibly restrained, for they would learn nothing. What they do learn, however, is always retained. This does not mean that each succeeding earth experiment will be made up of selves who have been through these cycles.

They may be personalities new to the system, new for that matter to any ideas, completely unused to conceptual thought or vision, beings only now emerging into strong individuality. Consciousness at your level is at a crisis point for many reasons.

Within your system, for the first time, individualized consciousness is strongly-enough organized to do, good or evil. Before that it was protected, somewhat coddled, with instinctual behavior holding it in bounds. It is not able to utilize enough energy to maintain a system of its own, but operates as an adjunct to other stronger systems.

Now some of those within your reality are having their first experience with an ego as you think of it. Others are returning to it, the system, in an effort lo learn more. There are guardians, so to speak, within your system, reincarnated for the last time to help keep it in some kind of order while the others mature. There are also some, not physical, who keep an eye out over the whole proceedings.

The training is necessary. The results at any given stage may not appear very hopeful, and in your terms there is indeed what seems to be a cumulative effect. There is a system of checks and balances that do operate. These exist within the inner selves. The system of checks and balances will operate up to a point, and maintain some stability.

There are alarm signals that trigger warnings through the entire physical reality. Disaster indeed shows itself within the dream state before it appears as physical fact.

Your ego is now focused within this reality. You have other egos focused in other realities. The inner self is aware of what is being done in all of these realities. There is some compensation, and the race knows this. Rubert (Jane Roberts’ greater self) wrote there were clumps of consciousness, and of course, he is correct. You are a part of many such clumps of consciousness. The abilities and potentials are not only being developed in this system but in others.

The race also realizes well the advantages and disadvantages of the physical reality it has adopted. It knows for example that there is a tendency to go to extremes. I mentioned earlier that the rewards, the challenges, and the dangers exist precisely because so much freedom is allowed.

Now. Those within the system know this. Regardless of what you think of their present performance at any given time it is from this system that the greatest potentials emerge; for having dealt with it, consciousness undergoes one of the severest tests in learning to handle its own energy.

The horror and the results of mismanagement, and the vulnerability, are the teaching methods that each consciousness has accepted before entering your system. There is no way out but to learn or to ruin the entire system. In no other field of reality are the terms so drastic. For this reason the inner self withholds much of its knowledge. There must be no leaning upon the very basic fact that behind and within the system there is relief. You must believe in physical reality and accept the vulnerability.

Now, from your system spring some of the most advanced of all identities. They go on and learn from other realities, granted, but yours is the hardest to manage, and those who accept it go off into a certain line of development where the potentials are beyond anything of which you can presently conceive.

I am telling you this not only because of your own earlier discussion, but also because this material will fit in with other sessions that I have in mind. You are not only ready for them but you are demanding them, and until you are ready you would not understand them.

First, quite simply, there are many who do not see those failings and shortcomings and trends of which you spoke earlier. They cannot be told; they learn. Alone they would not be permitted to destroy an entire reality. The mixture of consciousness within your system gives some control. The child must mature, and your system is a maturing ground, a very primary one. A beginning school for those who are trying out for particular kinds of experience. Some simply will not succeed. They will continue instead along other lines of development.

Now, you have quite literally put in your time, for centuries. This is one of the reasons that you find yourself very impatient with the development of your fellows who have not had that advantage as yet. You have learned. You cannot understand why they have not.

There are cycles of entry into your system. The first, mass entries do not give you war. Those entering are at first too bewildered. Manipulation within the physical universe is strange. They do not realize the potential of their own energy, and it is not until they begin to realize it that they are, led into temptation.

They have to learn to handle it constructively. Now cooperation is an innate feature to these entering selves. Without it they could not survive long enough to learn anything. The warlike periods do not begin until this group achieves some ability at manipulation. Now while it seems to you that there has been little advance, there has indeed, in the overall. Larger masses of individuals than ever before in this cycle realize that killing is wrong.

This cycle that I am speaking of goes back to the beginning of history as it is generally known, to your cavemen.

Now we will get on with some other subjects. But remember, you must consider the race and its inhabitants in the entire context of existence if you are to be realistic.

"I have never pretended to be such an awesome thing as a poet or an artist, and so I make no effort to judge your work on its aesthetic values: only on its intent, an intent that sought artistic expression beyond what you think of as commonplace; an intent, therefore, that raised your consciousness upward to seek for other methods of expression; an intent that led you toward an ideal called excellence; not an ideal called perfection; but an intent that led you to express what you felt as well as you could express it.

“And so, each of you, in your own way, attempt to live your lives excellently; to rise above levels of yourselves that disappear as you attempt new versions of excellence.

“There is greatness in each of you! Do not ever snicker when someone tells you that they want to be great, for you want to be great, and you know what that means in terms of your culture. For, to be great in those terms, is always to go beyond, to challenge even the self that you know, to become familiar with portions of yourself that you sense, and to manifest them within your own experience NOW.

“Excellence! There are no standards but your own! You cannot compare yourself against others. For your own abilities are like no others, and dimensions of your own greatness cannot fit in the standards of another. But you know what excellence means within yourself, and it means truth to the heart of yourself. There are some things you know it means. It means not lying. It means not lying to yourself; not being afraid to use your own abilities; not being afraid to be the excellent self that you are.

“Excellence does not mean false humility. It does not mean inflated, artificial pride that sets you apart from all others, for you cannot set yourselves apart from others. You are, because of your nature, both a part of all others and apart from all others. Each of you is also, everlastingly unique.

“In terms you understand, excellence means not lying to yourself. It means do not shop-lift. It is not funny! Stealing ideas is the same as stealing objects. To do so, is to say you don’t know the difference between what belongs to you and what doesn’t. You cannot stand there and say, "This (object or idea) is mine" when it is not. It means you’re not just playing around with the integrity of others, you’re playing around with your own integrity as well.

“Excellence means that in your relationships you face each other honestly. You do not pretend. It means that you do not make excuses. It means that you do not hide your abilities from yourself. It means that you take advantage of your abilities and expect things of yourself. You do not look to others for their answers. It means you do not dribble away your energy.

“It means that you know your own footing and do not lean upon others. You do not accept shifting grounds, but make your own ground based on integrity.

“It means that you accept responsibility for yourself and that you go your own way and use your own abilities, trusting that others will do the same.

“It means that when you have the ability to create, use it and do not judge the results by the standards of others unless it is meant for them. Judge them according to your own values. Trust the intuitive knowledge of your own being, that what you create and what comes from you is good.

“It means that you do not allow yourself to be used by others, and then use that as an excuse to stop learning and evolving. You are your own being. Luxuriate in that!

“It means that you do not over-pamper your children; that you allow yourself spontaneity;  that you develop an effective framework of ideas from which to operate. Make it one that allows you to `space-without’ and `space-within’ to accommodate both the physical and spiritual sides of you nature.

“It means that you try to separate your beliefs from the beliefs of others and of your culture, and that with all your sense of adventure and humor, you continue to question your ideas for what is practical and what is not.

“Good evening.”

“I wanted to add here that evidences for those other fields of actuality can be found even within the body itself; that is, within he physical body. But these evidences are not recognized for what they are, attempts being made to the contrary to fit these into the framework of conventional knowledge, where indeed they fit but poorly.

“Also, such placement of them is misleading when other deductions are drawn. Such evidences of other actualities could serve as important clues, which if followed could then begin to unravel the secrets which are secrets merely because of man’s refusal to pursue them.

“These clues could lead to proper understanding, so that it would be known that the physical body does exist in many fields of actuality, and through the study of various portions of the body many glimmerings could be received concerning the various fields of actuality themselves.

“To study the human body from only the physical standpoint, or to consider it as exclusively a physical phenomenon, is to severely limit your perception of it, and of reality as a whole. To study psychology exclusively in the terms of the brain’s effect upon the physical body is likewise hampering and limiting, for the brain is merely that portion of, that very small portion, of the mind which is apparent within matter. As such within your physical field the brain is subject to the laws of your field. The mind, having its existence within the scope of the physical field but independent of it, is a much more fruitful subject for study, and not of course study through means of physical instruments or of operations performed. In any case the mind cannot be found by such procedures.

“The mind will be found to be closely allied with the spacious present.. The mind’s capabilities, if studied, would lead man into a realization of these other fields of actuality of which I have spoken. The mind deals with intangibles, but it does not deal with unrealities. Again, the validity of an actuality is not to be determined by its appearance within matter alone. The ingredients of matter are first of all intangible ingredients, and the study of the mind and a study of the processes by which the mind creates its dream images could lead to a basic understanding of the manner in which man subconsciously produces the physical images of his own material universe.

“This study alone would involve an introduction into a knowledge of other fields of actuality. Biology has made many strides, but it must finally be concerned with the intangible which is behind all organisms, and it will be forced to the initiation of an entirely new field, along the lines of basic organic psychology. It will be forced to recognize the innate ability of all cells for what we may call telepathy, for there will be no other solution in answering many questions.

“In the most simple of living structures telepathy is a necessity for communication, particularly before the inside energy is concentrated sufficiently to form any sort of more complicated pattern or nerve structure. Even when such nerve structures and physical complications are evolved telepathy operates, still a necessity as a communications system within the physical structure, and still handling data which cannot be carried through any physical medium, simply because it is untranslatable by its nature into physical materialization.

“These points are all extremely important. Much will be said yet to clarify the term telepathy itself, since there are many types, which you should be able to see from what I have said. This in itself is a complicated subject, and yet when I am finished it will be shown that telepathy is an intimate, innate ability within all cells.”

(The word was unfamiliar to me and I asked Jane [Seth] to repeat it. She did so but I still did not understand it very clearly, and decided to wait until I could refer to Jung myself. It will be recalled that in the 83rd session, August 31, 1964, [in Volume 2], Seth commented on the work of Freud and Jung, and mentioned some of the distortions Jung’s work in particular contains. – Robert Butts)

“You will understand, Joseph (Robert Butts), when you read the book.

“Jane’s animus is indeed quite a different sort of chap from myself, much more omnipotent, to Jane’s subconscious. I will indeed speak concerning the inner ego, which is the organizing principle within the subconscious., but which looks into other worlds; toward worlds in which it has its origin, and does not have awareness of itself or possess self-consciousness within the physical universe. Its attention and focus is, rather, directed elsewhere, so that it appears to be dormant. But it is not.

“It is the ego (Self) or directive consciousness behind all personified aspects of the subconscious; in dormant fashion however, and contrary to Jung’s propositions, within the subconscious and in those personified aspects of it will be found remnant memory personalities of past reincarnated selves. They may be called shadows and yet they are not powerless. The inner ego, the directive organizer of the subconscious, also is the part of the self which is familiar with activities and methods of which the outer ego is ignorant. It is this organizer who directs not only the movements of the physical body from within, but directs from within those intimate survival mechanisms, without which the physical body could not exist, and upon which the existence of the outer ego is so dependent.

“It is this inner director who maintains all of these functions, and who is responsible for the physical health. It is this director to whom you must communicate when health fails. There are ways of doing this which we will discuss at a later date. It is this inner director who chooses the dream symbols in such a way that they will be meaningful to all layers or areas of the subconscious, and who is responsible for the amount, rate and type of subconscious data which is given to the outer ego by means of the intuitions.

“If the outer ego would be content to work on an equal basis with its inner counterpart, then many severe difficulties would be sidestepped.

“The outer ego, being of later development, is jealous of its position and would have all knowledge at its fingertips. This is impossible. It cannot stand to have anything hidden, but the very mechanism of its own behavior is hidden from itself, and it knows only the feel of its own surfaces.”

It is yours by right if you claim it, and if you do not claim it, or if you turn your back upon it, then it seems to you that you must look for it in others or that others are always happier than you are. Now, and all of you know what I am going to say, the tiniest cell within your tiniest toe is happy.

Feel its happiness. Feel the vitality that is your self as it always pervades your being. It is within you now, keeping you alive and sitting there so pert and pretty, so acknowledge it and listen and feel within yourself for that life energy that is always within you.

Look at a leaf or at a teaspoon or at one of your children or simply at a shadow and feel the miraculous uniqueness of what you see, and the miracle of the eyes that allow you to see it and the power of the brain that is able to make these connections, and then the happiness rides up through your being and you wonder how it was that you did not see it before.

But money will not make you happy, and alone, love from another will not make you happy. But love of yourself will, and it will lead to happiness for yourself and for others.”

[Conducted as usual, with Jane and me {Rob} sitting at the Ouija board.]

Rob: Are you there, Seth?

Yes.

Rob: Do you have a message for us?

Questions.

Rob: Do you have a last name?

No.

Rob: Are we in a trance or under light hypnosis when we are talking to you?

Sometimes.

Rob: Can we talk to you at any time we choose?

Try.

Rob: Can hypnosis send an individual ahead into his next incarnation or into life after his earth cycle is completed?

Yes, though much caution must be used.

Rob: Why such caution?

Inability to adjust and return intact.

Rob: Do you mean just mentally?

Spiritually.

Rob: Did you ever try anything like that while you lived on earth?

No, never thought of it.

Rob: Do you think you might have tried, had you been aware that such a thing was possible?

As Seth I might have. Other personalities would not.

Rob: Do you know many who have tried?

Attempted, yes.

Rob: Why is my father so timid?

He was an extremely aggressive woman last time. Caused unhappiness.

Rob: When?

18 century.

Rob: In what country?

France.

Rob: And, in what town or city?

Capitol. (Gratis) Always intelligent but often ruled by emotion, as now.

Rob: Can you tell us something about Jane’s father?

Fragment entity, uneasy with present personality. Gap between (t no) ego and subconscious, vital forces escape. He is a part of his last mother’s entity.

Rob: Why did Jane’s parents marry?

Attraction, both fragments. She solid aggression. He saw aggression as strength. She reborn too soon, chased after her father. Knew him before. Shocked to find herself his daughter. Wanted to be contemporary.

Rob: Why did my father marry my mother?

Vitality. Also wanted her boldness. (Gratis) He frozen on top. She frozen beneath. Together bearable temperature. Saved each other.

Rob: Would psychoanalysis or psychiatric help be of use in such cases?

Yes. Age is some detriment in that sort of adjustment.

Rob: Seth, where is Jane’s father right now, on December 11?

Florida.

Rob: Just where in Florida?

Orange Beach Park.

Rob: How long has he been there?

Very short time.

Rob: How many dogs does he have with him?

Three.

Rob: Is there anybody else with him?

Woman. (Gratis) He basically good but hidden aggressions a danger. They belonged to his mother. She put them on him unknowingly.

Rob: In what way are these aggressions a danger?

To him and others. Fragment ego not strong. Aggressions deep.

Rob: Can you give us the name of the woman with him right now?

No.

Rob: Why do human beings live only 75 years on the average?

That’s long enough. Entity is split during incarnations. Between lives whole self.

Rob: How many times have the continents of earth risen and fallen?

Endless.

Rob: When will the next period of such activity begin?

2000. (Gratis) Begin 2000.

Rob: Will this destroy our civilization as we know it?

No.

Rob: Seth, can you signal your presence to us by something like table raps?

Yes, possible. Sit quietly 3 minutes, wait.

This period began at 22:11. This was very strange for us. I was surprised to find my pulse speeding up. My palms became very wet. Jane and I did not know what, if anything, to expect. We both felt somewhat apprehensive. The table was close by my right hand. I used it to take notes on. The period ended at 22:14, with nothing happening.

(Gratis) I can’t get through. You aren’t receptive enough. When I can get through you will know.

Rob: Can we do anything to help?

Not consciously.

(Gratis. After I had remarked that perhaps Seth could try to move Jane’s ring, which lay on the table.)

I’ll try the ring.

(Gratis. After another wait, during which nothing happened.)

Sorry. Reaching to another level not easy.

(Gratis. While we were talking about the ring.)

Rob: Now what, Seth?

Ask.

Rob: Is it possible for humans to…

(I got this far in my question about levitation when the board began to answer.)

Levitation possible. Jane’s dreams on subject valid. Her intuitions good.

Jane had a very vivid dream about receiving instructions in levitation while we were on vacation in Maine last August.

Rob: Has Jane ever levitated?

Helped someone else. Trickery then, part trance.

Rob: Whom did she help?

Man.

Rob: Can you give us the man’s name?

No, but unwholesome.

Rob: Seth, in the future will it be possible for us to contact you without using the board?

The import is magical. Yes. Sometimes ask questions. Both try. Do not dispense with board but begin trying other method also.

Jane received the first few words of this answer within before the board spelled it out. I had not let her see the question as I wrote it down.

(Gratis) Begin training.

Jane received the word training.

Rob: Why do we have cripples?

I asked Jane. Her answer came deliberately, with little hesitation.

Fragments refuse to help individual as organized organism.

Jane said this was not the answer she would have given in her book on idea construction. But, later, after thinking it over, she said it could be the reason or motivating force behind her own explanation.

(Gratis) Very good.

Jane then received another message, which she quoted.

Also have Joseph try to answer questions. This is an experiment.

Jane then asked me if her book, To Hear a Dolphin, would be accepted by the publisher who now had it. I did not know consciously who the publisher was. I answered, thinking I saw the answer:

Rob: Yes.

(Gratis. From Seth.)

Be receptive and answer further.

I said the book would be accepted this month and that some changes would be asked for. The board answered.

Yes. (Gratis) Two together should do well with this.

Jane asked me her second question, as we sat with our hands on the pointer:

Jane: Is Ruburt my name? What is the significance of this name for me?”

I answered, eyes closed, describing a picture I saw before me:

Rob: Ruburt signifies a tall man walking along a path, in robes, and in hilly country. He reminds me of Joseph. He appears to be alone. The sky is very blue with white clouds. It is a very beautiful colorful day. I see gnarled trees and large boulders. Ruburt walks with his arms outstretched. The flowers, daisies, are very vivid, the grass very green.

(Gratis) Very good. You say more, I will correct. This is an aspect of spirit expansion as mentioned earlier.

After thinking a bit, I told Jane I had the thought that Ruburt was once Joseph.

(Gratis): Part of same entity or counterpart?

Rob: I think part of the same entity.

True.

Rob: Seth, what kind of an arrangement would that be?”

Excellent. High stage of cooperation. Near end of reincarnation cycle.

I was looking through our notes for a question I had down on how the Pyramids were built when Jane received the answer within:

Rock followed the will. Rock followed the hand of the will. (Gratis) Fine.

I then remarked that we were both quite tired and wanted to call it a night.

Go ahead.

Rob: Seth, when do you want us to contact you again?

Fri. 9 PM {21:00}, if you please.

But if you use it as a crutch, or if you believe that your high is dependent upon it, or that your joy is dependent upon it, or that it is your primary avenue to enlightenment, then you had better examine your beliefs more than you have…

ESP Class, 12-11-73

(Ingrid raised a question about drugs and the class got into a heavy discussion about them.

Rob (Robert Butts) commented that drugs in various forms were used throughout the ages of man.)

Now. I am going to bid you good evening, and if you realize now, I will make a few comments, but comments will tell you nothing that you do not know. Your beliefs about the drugs that you take are extremely important. Sometimes you can take the drugs you have been speaking about simply as a method of rebelling against the world that you know, and against the society. Some people who feel that they are minorities, like the feeling of being minorities. They like the sense of danger. They like the idea of being on the outskirts of society. They like the idea of doing something illegal. They want to be pursued. They enjoy the danger.

You make your own reality. Of course, there are alternate states of consciousness. And when you are in those states of consciousness, you do certain chemical things to your body. You can take a drug and do the same thing from the outside. And many people, of course, through the centuries, have taken drugs for that reason. They can serve to initiate tribes and groups to those alterations of consciousness. But if you begin to think that they represent your only way of achieving mental or psychological freedom, then you are using them as a crutch.

Now, there is nothing wrong with using them as a crutch except that you do not need the crutch to begin with. So we are not talking in moral terms. I am not saying anything is wrong or evil in moral terms. You are each intimately aware of the balance of your own personalities. And you always sense where there is an imbalance. And so you know when it is time to change. You can become addicted to eating a paper cup, if you believe it. There are tribes who chew cocaine leaves and do a full day’s work and think there is nothing strange about it. But when you take drugs such as that in your society, it means something entirely different. The effect is not the same.

And so I simply want you to consider such things and understand the reasons for your actions. And Ruburt (Jane Roberts) was correct. Never are we so sure of our convictions in our speech, when we wonder about them in our hearts. But you are all doing well. And if you would simply realize, you do not need drugs. You produce through your thoughts and feelings all the chemicals that you need to turn you on to whatever extent, and you do not have to buy them. And you do not have to worry about the police coming. But then, that is all too natural and uninvolved and unexciting.

I bid you all a fond good night and where you are I am, because I represent the part of you that you know you are. And I am nothing that you are not. I am nothing that you are not, in true fact, in the true meaning of the word. So any wisdom or power or energy that you assign to me you cannot do rightfully unless you assign that power to yourselves. I am in your dreams because I am the self that you know you are. And you are in my dreams for the same reasons. There is room in our system of beliefs for different tastes. For those who have a love of terms, and those who do not. For those who have different styles of being.

ESP Class 9-29-79

(After a discussion of Seth’s remarks, Wade completed reading Chapter 9 of Seth’s book (Personal Reality, I think), and Larry started to read Chapter 10. In the chapter, the subject dealt with massive doses of LSD.)

During the reading, Seth interrupted:

Now, instead of the next massive dose, there are many people who think that the next occult school will do it, or the next religion, or the next political party, or the next new medicine, or the next new wonder drug, or the next new improved god will all do it. Excedrin will do it if you believe in it! Acid will do it if you believe it. But you will do it if you believe it.

And each person reading those passages will for himself see what he has put up before himself, instead of himself – what beliefs, what god, what product, what medicine man, what guru, what father, what mother, (Pat interjected: “What diet!”) what diet, what vitamin, and each reader will follow his own journey as he reads that chapter….

(L passed the manuscript to Richard and reading of Chapter 10 continued.)

Seth again interrupted:

Now, I want to make a note that will not be in the printed book. What I said applies to massive doses of acid. The same chemical disorientation, however, can also occur with quite accepted medical drugs – as I have, to some extent explained further on in that chapter – where the messages are literally scrambled on a biological basis. The self tries to solve a particular problem. In so doing, it may end up with a physical difficulty. The physical difficulty is meant to remind the personality of the inner problem behind it. The difficulty will be cleared up when the inner problem is.

Now, if instead a drug is used to camouflage the ailment, or in your terms to heal it, to cure it, to get rid of it, the inner self is in a quandary for it knows the problem has not been solved though the symptom has disappeared. The drug used to cure the body may now, may in many instances, obscure the problem and confuse both the body and the mind. Another ailment must be taken, therefore, that will symbolically, and quite practically, materialize the problem in your reality. So the patient will get another ailment.

If this ailment is also obscured or cured through the drug, whatever it may be, then the inner self is in a further quandary, and it will continue to try to materialize the problem so that it can be solved. The communication between the mental, psychic, and physical portions of the being can, in such instances, become obscured.

Now that does not always apply: for someone with a severe difficulty, believing in the effectiveness of your doctors may be given a wonder drug and believe in it so that when the symptoms are completely annihilated, he is convinced of the fact of an inner help, and therefore feels secure enough to solve his inner problem. In such a case, however, he has effectively used the drug to heal his mind and his body. The drug has not done it.

This does not mean that you cannot take advantage of such drugs. It does mean that when you do, you are operating within a framework of reality that still, to some extent, divides you from the reality of your own being.

Now, I return you to the book.

(Before Seth withdrew, Sue, Wade and Marianne all asked him about particular situations dealing with their parents. Seth answered their questions and then he was asked about peyote as an hallucinatory drug.

Seth responded:

There is a small bit on peyote, in other terms, in the book. However, peyote, used naturally by the natives who use it, has an entirely different idea than most of you have about the drug. It is not expected to annihilate an ego. They used it within a social framework in which it was perfectly natural. There was no paranoia connected with it.

So the reason that you use a drug is highly important. When you use peyote, you expect it to give you, again, a new occult, forbidden knowledge. When the natives used it, they expected it to give them the wisdom of the leaves and the flowers, to activate within themselves the nature that they know they possess, and it is as natural as you when you eat bacon and eggs. Therein lies the difference in your beliefs.

ESP Class, 2-5-74

You do not need, in Ruburt’s (Jane’s) terms, to take acid. You do not need to find the answers from acid or from me – even when I am acidy.

The answers are within yourself – you simply have not believed it. You have an ego because you are conscious. The ego is a responsive part of yourself. It is not a stupid relative to be shunted out of the way. And yet you look at it constantly and you say, “You stupid thing, you know nothing – out you go! Let my pure unconscious well up and give me the answers.

And so your life operates according to your beliefs. And since you believe you do not have the answers, it does not seriously occur to you to listen to yourself. You listen to your animus or your anima or your shadow. But try listening to the self that you are in all your remarkable unity. And then the answers are and they are a part of you.

ESP Class, 12-12-72

I am not telling everyone to go out and get grass. But grass is a natural ingredient, and acid is not, in your terms. There are those who go on fasts and will not touch liquor or cigarettes, who will not look an egg in the face, and who will take acid without a qualm.

It has various effects – few that you understand – and it brings to the forefront the knowledge of the self with which you are not, at this point, equipped to deal. The resultant lack of balance can be disastrous.

You were lucky. I use the term lucky in that you were graced to assimilate that knowledge in a way that you could at least bear, if not understand. I will have much to say at a later date along those lines.

But when you have mental experiences of the same kind of nature that are not brought about by drugs, then you draw out from the cells that knowledge. And you are prepared to face it. And drawing out from your cells that knowledge, you bring about, on your own account, certain changes in those cells that are otherwise brought about without preparation. Cells are alive and living; they are conscious and aware. They have their joy as you have yours.

ESP Class, 1-16-73

A squirrel is filled with the reality and present joy of his being, and none of you today has seen a squirrel with a hypodermic up in his tree. He does not need it either. He does not need peyote. He does not need acid. He does not need grass. Because he is that which he is, and he is full of the joy of his being and not afraid of it. And as he scampers through the branches, he is not afraid of falling down either, because he trusts his own being. And he knows, without your fine intellect, that he has a place in this universe, that a place was made for him and that his being is sacred and joyful and alive. So for any of you who may stray so deeply, those remarks were addressed!”

There are other drugs however, and if these are discovered and utilized, then these developments could occur within the field of psychology itself. The drugs release certain barriers that stand between the physical body and its other forms. One such plant resembles the cotton plant, yet with very small yellow or yellow white seeds, and grows in certain portions of Africa (Iboga plant – Tabernanthe Iboga?). Its effect would seem to be highly hallucinatory. The hallucinations however would be quite valid journeys into other realities.

Session 410 from “The Early Sessions, Book 8“.

Since it was my first time taking LSD, he broke a small piece off a transparent square of Window Pane (pure LSD), the whole of which is normally considered a single dose. It seemed like a half hour had passed before I felt the drug kick in. The first thing I noticed was that as I thought about a new idea or concept, it seemed to take on a life of its own. Looking at each one from the inside-out, I could see pathways or variations in each one that, if followed, would lead me to other ideas. Suddenly, every thought I viewed from the inside-out became a complex environment like any other. As I explored the possibility that every idea is connected to every other idea, I came upon a stream with stepping stones from one side to the other. While the stream acted like the membrane of a cell separating two unique and different ideas, the stepping stones connected them.

Shape Shifting on LSD:

In late 1980, I took LSD for the second time. This time it was in the form of a small white tablet. When it kicked in I stripped naked and stood in front of the bathroom mirror. It was daytime and I was home alone. On impulse, I began to Tone, repeating the sound of, “ohm”, out loud. Immediately, intricate tattoos began to appear on my neck, starting at the top and growing down. As they spread over my shoulders and started down my chest, I became uncomfortable and began to wonder if I might have been an Aztec priest in another lifetime, one who had participated in the ritual of human sacrifice. The thought of seeing myself kill someone by cutting out their heart made me feel nauseous. When the tattoos reached the bottom of my rib cage they stopped growing and turned into feathers. I was now half man and half bird (Quetzalcoatl?).

Chest Cavity Blues – Role for Marijuana in Therapy:

Each box contained an old person (I was 39 years old at the time). Some people sat against the side wall of their box with their legs pulled up while others faced straight out with their legs dangling over the edge. Some of the women wore short cotton summer dresses with nylon stockings rolled down to their ankles. Other women wore bathrobes and muumuus. The men were in retirement-home garb too. Some wore bathrobes and others wore pajamas or sweats. Some people looked like they had suffered strokes while others appeared to be suffering from plain old age or dementia. Many were drooling. Most looked distant as they waited to die. They all looked tired and done with life. Did this scene, these people, represent the current state of my psyche? Wow!

To begin we sat silently at the board, hands on the pointer. As was usual now Jane began to hear Seth within almost immediately. After taking a few words through the board she laid it aside and began to dictate. Her eyes darkened considerably. At times, they appeared to contain no highlights.

This is our longest session to date. And, at its end, we were both weary. Jane smoked 16 cigarettes. Her voice was normal most of the time. She had a few periods of loudness. – Rob [Robert Butts])

“As to Jane’s feeling about the tree having certain consciousness, of course, this is the case. What you have here is much latent energy and vitality and capacity, with much of it withheld or suspended momentarily.

“The tree is, of course, dissociated in one manner. In some ways, its living forces and consciousness are kept to a minimum. It is in a state of drowsiness, on the one hand. And, on the other hand, it focuses the usable portion of its energy into being a tree. The state of consciousness involved here is dull as compared to the highly differentiated human ability in many ways.

“However, in some other manners, the experiences of the tree are extremely deep, dealing with the inner senses which are, and properly so, properties of treedom. There is something here difficult for me to explain clearly. The inner senses of the tree have strong affinity with the properties of earth itself. They feel their growing. They listen to their growing as you listen to your own heartbeat. They experience this oneness with their own growth. And, they also experience pain. The pain, however, while definite, unpleasant, and sometimes agonizing is not of an emotional nature in the same way that you might experience pain.

“In some ways, it is even a deeper thing. The analogy may not be a perfect one, far from it. But, it is as if your breath were to be suddenly cut off. In a manner, this somewhat approximates pain for a tree.

“The tree makes adjustments as you make adjustments. The tree listens to its growth up from the earth and listens also to the murmur of the growth of its roots beneath. It adjusts each root ending according to what impediments might lie in its way. Without the so-called mind of man, it, nevertheless, retains this inner consciousness of all its parts above and below the ground and adjusts them constantly.

“The tree is also inwardly aware of its environment to an astonishing degree. It maintains contact awareness and the ability to manipulate itself in two completely different worlds, so to speak, one in which it meets little resistance growing upward and one composed of much heavier elements into which it must grow downward. Man needs artificial methods, for example, to operate effectively on land or in water. But, the so-called unconscious tree manages very nicely in two worlds, as diverse certainly as land and water, and makes himself a part of each. I am speaking now of a tree as a “he” for reasons that I will go into in a further discussion.

“And, as far as motion is concerned, the tree moves upward and downward. It is quite unfair to say that it can not transport itself, since it does so to an amazing degree, the roots and limbs moving in all directions. The inner senses of all plant life are well attuned, alert, and very important. All these fragments have consciousness to a rather high degree, considering that man holds them in such ill repute.*

“If you will remember what you know of the trance state, you are, for example, in a light trance, able to maintain awareness of yourself, your environment, and your place in it. You simply behave somewhat differently, not bestirring yourself in any direction unless the suggestion to do so be given you.

“The awareness of plant life lies along these lines. In a deep trance there is oblivion afterward. That is, the subject, though fully aware of what is going on while in deep trance, can remember nothing of it afterward. The awareness of plant life is also like the awareness of a subject in deep trance. Except for the suggestion and stimulus received by regular natural forces on your plane, the plant life does not bestir itself in other directions. But, like the subject in trance, our plant is aware. Its other abilities lie unused for the time and latent. But, they are present.

“The awareness is focused along certain lines. The energy is likewise focused. Much of the ability, again, is suspended as for a subject in a trance. But, consciousness is present. Your hybrid plants merely demonstrate this susceptibility to new suggestion which your plant, like your susceptible trance subject, will gladly follow. I will have more to say along this road of thought but am detoured for just a moment as to which fork to follow.”

(Break at 21:43. Jane felt that Seth wanted to go on but had so many points of departure to choose from that he couldn’t decide which to pursue first. “I can feel him buzzing around,” she said just before she resumed dictating at 21:50.)

“As you have probably supposed by now, there is consciousness in everything. Visible or invisible to you, each fragment of the universe has a consciousness of its own. Pain and pleasure, the strongest aspects of all consciousness, are experienced strongly by every fragment, according to its degree. Differentiation is, of course, various. And, it is in the degree of differentiation that consciousness is different.

“In some fragments, such as much plant life and vegetative life, there is strong use of certain inner senses. Your rocks, Joseph, I will call vegetative. Rocks are far from lifeless. Other types of life, including your own, rely on the recognized outer senses. The ideal, of course, is a consciousness that is adept at using both the inner and outer senses fully.

“Your tree lives through its inner senses, experiencing many sensations and reacting to many stimuli of which you are unaware. Minute earth tremors, even the motion of small ants about its lower trunk, are recognized and experienced by tree consciousness. Such invisibilities as humidity, radioactivity, and all electrical earthly values are felt as quite real things by your tree and recognized as being separate from the tree itself.

“A tree knows a human being, also. Not only, for example, by the weight of a boy upon its branches but by the vibrations in the air as adults pass, which hit the tree’s trunk at varying distances, and even by such things as voices. You must remember my earlier remarks about mental enzymes and my remark that color can sometimes be heard and sight be seen.

“In drawing up his list of so-called natural laws, I have said that man decided that what appeared to be cause and effect to him was, therefore, a natural law of the universe. Not only do these so-called laws, which are not laws, vary according to where you are in the universe, they also vary according to what you are in the universe. Therefore, your tree recognizes a human being, though it does not see the human being, in your terms. To a tree the laws are simply different. And, if a tree wrote its laws of the universe, then you would know how different they are.

“The tree does not even build up an image of man, which is why this is difficult to explain. I have no intention of going deeper into this matter than you can follow at this time. Nevertheless, the tree builds up a composite sensation which represents, say, an individual man. And the same tree will recognize the same man who passes it by each day.

“Beside the recognized outer senses and the inner senses, of which you are just now beginning to gain knowledge, there are other inner and even outer senses, which you are not quite ready to understand. They deal with finer distinctions than you know now, being somewhat of the nature of your body’s ability to sense another person’s aggression. As your body senses temperature changes, so it also senses the psychic charge not only of other human beings but, also, believe it or not, of animals. And, to a lesser extent, it senses the psychic charge of plants and vegetative matter. Your tree builds up a composite of sensations of this sort, sensing not the physical dimensions of a material object, whatever it is, but the vital psychic formation within and about it.

“Size, however, is sensed by a tree, perhaps because of its inherent concern with height. The table around which Ruburt (Jane Roberts) now walks senses Ruburt even as Ruburt senses the table. At a later date, I intend to go quite intensively into the means by which other fragments sense each other and man. The abilities of the tree are latent in man as, dear Joseph (Rob) , are the abilities latent in the tree.”
