No! The sun is itself as you are yourself, and through your being you bless yourself and all others. Being yourself, you can trust yourself, and your responsibilities are automatically fulfilled. But, if you do not trust yourself, there is no responsibility that you can fulfill, and no one you can truly help.”

Man’s vulnerability to pain helps him sympathize with others, and therefore helps him to more actively alleviate whatever unnecessary causes of pain exist in society.

Each person’s experience of a painful nature is also registered on the part of what we will call the world’s mind. Each failure, disappointment, or unresolved problem that results in suffering becomes a part of the world’s experience. It learns that this way or that way does not work, or this way or that way has been tried with poor results. So in that way, even weaknesses or failures of suffering are resolved, or rather redeemed as adjustments are made in the light of that data.

In that regard, each person lives his or her life privately and, yet, for all of humanity. Each person tries out new challenges, new circumstances, new achievements from a unique viewpoint, for himself or herself, and for the entire mass of humanity as well.”

Seth:

The personality of Christ is an idealization and a clue to the entity of which each individual personality is composed, and as far as prayer is concerned, though I realize that neither of you pray in those terms, someone does indeed listen. The self who prays listens and makes necessary adjustments and improvements. For the individual is part of All That Is and, therefore, partakes of the abilities of the psychic gestalts of which we have so sketchily spoken.

Session 560, Seth Speaks – the Eternal Validity of the Soul

Now: Whether or not the Crucifixion occurred physically, it was a psychic event and exists as do all the other events connected with the drama. Many were physical, but some were not. The psychic event affected your world quite as much as the physical one, as is obvious. The whole drama occurred as a result of mankind’s need. It was created as a result of that need, grew out of it, but it did not originate within your system of reality.

Other religions were based upon different dramas, in which ideas were acted out in a way that was comprehensible to various cultures. Unfortunately, the differences between the dramas often led to misunderstandings, and these were used as excuses for wars. These dramas are also privately worked out in the dream state. The God personified figures first were introduced to man in the dream state and the way then prepared.

In visions and inspirations, men knew that the Christ drama would be enacted and hence recognized it for what it was when it occurred physically. Its power and strength then returned to the dream universe. It had increased its vigor and intensity through the physical materialization. In private dreams, men then related to the main figures in the drama, and in the dream state they recognized its true import.

Session 586, Seth Speaks

The inner self alone, at rest, in meditation, can at times glimpse portions of these inner realities that cannot be physically expressed. These values, intuitions, or insights are given each to each according to his understanding, and so the stories told about them will often vary. For example, the main character in a religious historical drama may or may not consciously be aware of the ways in which such information is given to him, and yet it may seem to him that he does know, for the nature of a dogma’s origin will be explained in terms that this main character can understand. The historical Jesus knew who he was, but he also knew that he was one of three personalities composing one entity. To a large extent he shared in the memory of the other two. The third personality, mentioned many times by me, has not in your terms yet appeared, although his existence has been prophesied as the “Second Coming” (Matthew 24). Now these prophecies were given in terms of the current culture at that time, and, therefore, while the stage has been set, the distortions are deplorable, for this Christ will not come at the end of your world as the prophecies have been maintaining.

He will not come to reward the righteous and send evildoers to eternal doom. He will, however, begin a new religious drama. A certain historical continuity will be maintained. As happened once before; however, he will not be generally known for who he is. There will be no glorious proclamation to which the whole world will bow. He will return to straighten out Christianity, which will be in a shambles at the time of his arrival and to set up a new system of thought when the world is sorely in need of one.

By that time, all religions will be in severe crisis. He will undermine religious organizations — not unite them. His message will be that of the individual in relation to All That Is. He will clearly state methods by which each individual can attain a state of intimate contact with his own entity; the entity to some extent being man’s mediator with All That Is.

By 2075, all of this will be already accomplished. You may make a note here that Nostradamus saw the dissolution of the Roman Catholic Church as the end of the world. He could not imagine civilization without it, hence many of his later predictions should be read with this in mind.

The third personality of Christ will indeed be known as a great psychic, for it is he who will teach humanity to use those inner senses that alone make true spirituality possible. Slayers and victims will change roles as reincarnational memories rise to the surface of consciousness. Through the development of these abilities, the sacredness of all life will be intimately recognized and appreciated.

The third historical personage, already born in your terms, and a portion of the entire Christ personality, took upon himself the role of a zealot. This person had superior energy and power and great organizing abilities, but it was the errors that he made unwittingly that perpetuated some dangerous distortions. The records of that historical period are scattered and contradictory.

The man, historically now, was Paul or Saul. It was given to him to set up a framework, but it was to be a framework of ideas, not of regulations; of men, not of groups. Here he fell down, and he will return as the third personality, just mentioned, in your future. In that respect, however, there are not four personalities.

Now Saul went to great lengths to set himself as a separate identity. His characteristics, for example, were seemingly quite different from those of the historical Christ. He was “converted” in an intense personal experience — a fact that was meant to impress upon him the personal and not organizational aspects. Yet some exploits of his in his earlier life have been attributed to Christ — not as a young man, but earlier.

All personalities have free will and work out their own challenges. The same applied to Saul. The organizational “distortions”, however, were also necessary within the framework of history as events are understood. Saul’s tendencies were known, therefore, at another level. They served a purpose. It is for this reason, however, that he will emerge once again, this time to destroy those distortions.

Now he did not create them on his own and thrust them upon historical reality. He created them in so far as he found himself forced to admit certain facts: In that world at that time, earthly power was needed to hold Christian ideas apart from numberless other theories and religions, to maintain them in the middle of warring factions. It was his job to form a physical framework, and even then he was afraid that the framework would strangle the ideas, but he saw no other way.

He was called both. When the third personality re-emerges historically, however, he will not be called the old Paul, but will carry within him the characteristics of all the three personalities.

Session 587, Seth Speaks

The dramas themselves do express certain inner realities, and they serve as surface reminders to those who do not trust direct experience with the inner self. They will take the symbols as reality. When they discover that this is not so, they feel betrayed.

Christ spoke in terms of the father and son because in your terms, at that time, this was the method used — the story He told to explain the relationship between the inner self and the physically alive individual. No new religion really startles anyone, for the drama has already been played subjectively.

What I have said, of course, applies as much to Buddha as it does to Christ: both accepted the inner projections and then tried to physically represent these. They were more, however, than the sum of those projections. This also should be understood.

Mohammedanism fell far short. In this case the projections were of violence predominating. Love and kinship were secondary to what indeed amounted to baptism and communion through violence and blood…

Session 591, Seth Speaks

Symbolically, however, the crucifixion idea itself embodied deep dilemmas and meanings of the human psyche, and so the crucifixion per se became a far greater reality than the actual physical events that occurred at the time. Only the deluded are in danger of, or capable of, such self sacrifice, you see, or find it necessary. Only those still bound up in ideas of crime and punishment would be attracted to that kind of religious drama, and find within it deep echoes of their own subjective feelings.

Christ knew, however, clairvoyantly, that these events in one way or another would occur, and the probable dramas that could result. The man involved could not be swerved from his subjective decision. He would be sacrificed to make the old Jewish prophecies come true, and he could not be dissuaded.

In the Last Supper when Christ said, “This is my body, and this is my blood,” He meant to show that the spirit was within all matter, interconnected, and yet apart — that His own spirit was independent of His body, and also in His own way to hint that He should no longer be identified with His body. For He knew the dead body would not be His own.

This was all misunderstood. Christ then changed His mode of behavior, appearing quite often in out-of-body states to His followers. (See John 20, 21; Matthew 28; Luke 24.) Before, he had not done this to that degree. He tried to tell them, however, that He was not dead, and they chose to take Him symbolically.

His physical presence was no longer necessary, and was even an embarrassment under the circumstances. He simply willed Himself out of it.

ESP Class (1972.12.19)

Do not think that Christmas is too camp. In your civilization, when you allow it to, it speaks to the child in you. Accept the child and enjoy the myth, for behind the myth there is truth, and the truth is that you are reborn, and the truth is that the inner self does have the wonder of a child.

Other stories have been wound about those truths, but the truths remain. The god Pan has as great a validity as Christ has. The names change; the stories change to fit your ideas and your civilization.

Now, I prefer Pan piping his magic flutes over the countryside and drinking wine, to a Christ born to be crucified, but that is my idea; you pick your own.

Behind all the myths is the reality. You are born with the wonder of a child again to remake the world in a new image. Christmas should represent the rebirth of the self.

The more unsafe the world is felt to be, then the more important protection is and the more threatening, expression. Repression becomes the order of the day.

The species however will always react against repression, no matter what its source, and so will the individual. On the whole the species is beginning to change its psychological sense of selfhood. There are periods in history when this happened before, and a new kind of civilization resulted. The earliest Jewish traditions represent one such change. The beginning period of the Egyptian Civilization another, the birth of Christ another, and the beginning of the scientific age.

“In certain terms, Christ was a myth who did not exist in the terms that you believe. Indeed there was a man called Christ. There were thousands of men called Christ! There were miracle workers all over the place!

There were politics involved—and the Romans and the Jews and the Essenes and a thousand different Jewish groups. That part of the world was seething emotionally. They were searching, and from their desire and from the state of their consciousness, then, emerged the story.

There is a Christ consciousness. That consciousness existed before the story. But it has little to do with the tale. And it did not involve a crucifixion. The Jews wanted a man crucified. Certain members of Jewish political groups wanted to see the idea of a Messiah ended, for all intents and purposes, in those times. Other groups wanted a Messiah to rise from the dead. They wanted a crucifixion and they wanted a martyr—a Jewish martyr.”

“Now, legends are all right, and for a while they serve a purpose. But people grow out of their legends, and if they believe that their legends are Truth, there are psychic growing pains indeed! If they realize that their legends are symbols, then they can move more readily.”

In certain terms Christ was an invention, but then all the “gods” as they have been known were inventions, creative interpretations that were projected outward catching first this man or that woman with the brilliance of divine fire.

In certain terms, religions are myths. However, to say that is to speak half the truth for myths stand for a reality that defies literal “factual” translation. Because of this, religions will always basically imply contradictions but, so far, no one have been strong enough to accept these contradictions or to look into their basic cause.

The Christ spirit is quite valid. Its validity is seven-fold more amazing because it doesn’t only rest upon the historical reality of one man. The mythological side of Christ shaped the great pageantry of history, affected and directed events, brought about a particular kind of world order, led artists to the points of their finest power. All this development based upon a fabulous myth. Myths indeed then must be very powerful and carry within them their own dimension of actuality and thrust.

Christianity has long stated that Christ’s importance lay precisely in the fact that he was born as a physical being, and it has stressed his historical existence in whatever way it could. It seemed that if Christ were not one particular man, then the entire framework would fall away. He was, after all, human and divine at the same time.

The early strength of Christianity lay precisely in its historical nebulousness – a loose but powerful framework that reflected the explosive need of the mass psyche. That need, like a giant spotlight, searched and shone its light in all directions and touched many. Some turned away and were frightened of such a sense of destiny. They hid. Others felt the power of the light as it touched their contemporaries and shouted, “That is the man.”

Gods-to-be vied for birth until finally various events coalesced. A manufactured history of Christ exists, made up of distorted memories, actual experiences, and creative drama. Many tales were written long after any of the source-Christs lived. The miracle is the “fact” that this mix of real and imagined stories altered the face of the planet and directed its energies for centuries.

The idea of one Christ gave a focal point for identification, a specific image that individuals could refer to. The process of this image-forming was a natural one as men and women dealt with innuendo, legend, and some renditions of personal experience until, all together, you have an ever-changing religious drama, a framework into which man could throw his aspirations.

The Christ spirit was valid precisely because it managed to survive such a framework. The Christ spirit is larger than any so-called physical fact, but unless this is understood then the validity of that spirit seems dependent upon the historical reality of one man, part human, part divine, named Christ.

When you’re in that framework then the Christ messages must also be interpreted literally, as they were at the time. Man often wants to use religion as another tool to solve his problems. The messages are interpreted in the most practical way possible by minds limited by experience and knowledge.<.span>

Christ’s message then was picked up, used, altered to fit a thousand different purposes, and yet it survived and still led whole groups of people through the ages. People pour new revelations into the current bowl of known facts and when those so-called facts are proved outdated later, they produce turmoil.

Man’s state of consciousness at the time, historically given as Christ’s birth, was such that the ego was strongly emerging. It felt its strength but was also afraid of its own daring and identified strongly with the mortality of the body. It needed a new creative forward-thrusting impetus that would enable it to realize its existence after death and to reinforce that intuitive knowledge. The Jewish prophets had foreseen such a state, and there was a built-in psychic framework ready. The male god was still used, however, for the race had chosen to identify the ego with the male characteristics and the female with the intuitive ones.

The Christ myth arose triumphantly from the shoulders, figuratively speaking, of several lives. The air was ripe. There were a large number of splintered religious sects and self-proclaimed messiahs everywhere. But the self-proclaimed messiahs stood for an inner messiah and for man’s need to rise above the conditions of time and consciousness. The people ask what truth is, and when they do so they question from a certain limited viewpoint and deal with a limited order of events. It is as if someone asks you, “I want to know if a violet is a truth.” You answer, “Yes,” and the individual then goes shouting to all his fellows, “Aha – all roses are lies because violets are truth.”

In certain terms the spirit of All That Is shone down upon the people and illuminated them in a time of need. It spoke out through the lives, words, and deeds of several men and mankind creatively weaved the spirit of these messages into a myth that contained the great energy and power of its source.

In your time you may smile indulgently at the gods of Olympus, and see clearly that they were mythical characters. There are nature gods, come and gone, whose names do not even remain, buried fantasies you might say, precious folklore lost. Yet those gods were no more real or no more false, or no more facts or no less facts, and no more powerful or less powerful than your own. They also reigned and molded civilizations. Men and women prayed to them at dusk and dawn, and their prayers were answered, as yours are if you believe that they will be.

All these gods are the result of earthly interpretations of deeper truths, interpreted according to man’s beliefs at the time. The faces are different, as are the names and forms but they always reflect humanity’s relationship with the source of its being. For that being, while physical, springs from sources that cannot be completely expressed in physical terms, so the gods have had earthly faces, and the legends have always been larger than the lives upon which they were based.

The Buddha and the Christ spirit have the same source, then, interpreted through different cultures and different times. To some extent, each man and woman alive is involved in god-making. It is one of your natural characteristics, quite ignored by your psychologists. It is a mark of your species.

Men do not make gods just because they are frightened. They do not make gods just because they’re looking for answers. They make gods because they instinctually feel the strength and energy of their own greater being. They are also intuitively aware of other dimensions in which they have their existence.

Men make gods to explore the nature of their inner reality, and this is as natural a part of the species as it is for man to explore his physical planet. He builds cities in the world, increasing commerce and communication, storing his art treasures, and he builds gods in the inner environment of his psyche in the same way. In your terms his evolutionary progress follows the progress of the gods. Those gods tantalizingly lead him forward like the carrot before the donkey, and they represent the great unknown potential that is inherent in the species. They represent the source reality from which the “fact” of man’s individual life springs, and therefore they are larger than any fact. So when that reality is poured into the ever-changing world of fact, there will always be contradictions until you realize that the contradictions themselves are invaluable clues.

If you look at the religious and cultural “underground” at any given time of great change, you will find two opposing factions. On one side you see an extreme, almost hysterical version of the old or established religious concepts. On the other, you see a countering force of ideas that may have been building for more than a century. It may be appearing here and there but it has yet to capture the imagination of the masses.

Often, it will appear colored by the “old” established religious culture or couched in its terms while carrying many ideas and beliefs that are definitely unacceptable to mainline thought. There will also be tumultuous areas in between where the new and old ideas meet and explode into variations. New gods rise from the ashes of the old ones.

In your time, Christian fundamentalists militantly bear the swords of many extremist doctrines not accepted by the general Christian community. They are based on old fears and superstitions. On the other hand the religious concepts that point toward your future also exist in the same underground of the culture, even though they may be couched in conventional Christian terms. As an example, Edgar Cayce interpreted his revelations in such a way that they fit in with his conventional Christian beliefs.

Those who are learning to alter the focus of their consciousness often interpret their information in the same manner. So once again, you have good spirits or angels of the light, versus evil. To continue evolving, altered religious concepts must have a cultural connection or coloration to be nonthreatening.

The populace in your country is experimenting more and more with altered perception. Yet these states are still considered somewhat suspect and will be interpreted by the individual usually through his own belief system. A fundamentalist, frightened of evil and convinced of its power, will encounter a demon. A spiritualist will ask for a protective Christ circle, perhaps, or otherwise seek protection from the “evil spirits.”

There will be Tibetan masters, as there have been, or Indian guides – or whatever format serves as a framework. Earlier, God or the Virgin or one of the saints might speak, but throughout the ages the great development of the psyche found its voice by whatever names. Thus far, in your terms, there always had to be good spirits and bad spirits or a Christ and Antichrist, a god and a devil because man’s consciousness has not yet been able to rise above such seeming realities.

In the past the mechanisms, the myths and the pageantry served in one way or another to express the deeper realities for which they stand. Now man’s consciousness is ready for another quantum leap in which it must begin to throw away those disguises for they serve to hide now instead of reveal.

Man thought that by making his gods “real” he proved their validity. For a while the process meant something. For truly the gods are living. The native man knew that the gods lived and thrived in each rock, plant, animal and person. As the species developed, man became more narrowly focused. His gods became super examples of the species and finally represented only half of the species. When Christ was seen as born into a specific time, imprisoned in a few earthly years, even though he was supposed to have ascended after death, he still represented a watered-down version of a god who could no longer be seen in rocks, animals, plants and people.

Nevertheless, he served  as a beacon to consciousness as it traveled a certain road. Once more that road is branching out. The species is once again beginning to use its consciousness more freely and having experiences it did not have before.

In that old frame of reference there had to be one god or none. There could not be many for the idea of many gods smacked not only of paganism but of primitive superstition. If the idea of one god was correct, then the concept of many gods had to be wrong. The person who said, “There is no god” was an atheist from both standpoints. The greater reality comfortably holds all three beliefs without contradiction, for there is no god if you are thinking of simply a crowned king of your own species. There are many gods if you realize that each of you is a portion of All That Is. There is one god above all if you think of All That Is as it exists, being more than its infinite manifestations. Its manifestations, however, include rocks and trees, animals, atoms and molecules – and they are not inferior versions of what you are. They are simply other versions of All That Is.

Now Ruburt, in stripping away myth, helps put each individual who reads this material in touch with the greater more sacred reality from which those myths spring. The true nature of mysticism can never be made literal, and the Christ spirit can only show more clearly when it is not confined to a fact system to which it does not belong.

Then the Christ story can be clearly related to you as an example of a sublime fantasy based on a truth that is a source of all life.

Now, I will tell you a children’s tale. Once upon a merry time, on a distant star, there lived a fine people. They were not physical people, in your terms, and, if you traveled to that star now in your spaceships, you would not see them. You would walk through the fields and think that the land was barren. You would land in your spaceships and, though the whole populace came out to greet you, you would see no one.

In this very, very distant time, these people, who were very gifted and are still very gifted–these people had a dream. They were, in a strange way, mathematicians and scientists, but in a way that had nothing to do with physical space or physical theories. Out of their great power, they imagined a dimension of reality in which there were trees and fields and physical beings with physical bodies; skies that were blue; and water that fell down from the sky. They did this out of their great creativity and from themselves because, in your terms, they were a race of gods.

They conceived a dimension of reality in which these things would, indeed, exist, and from themselves they sent out portions of their own entity and consciousness. When I say they did this, I mean that they did it joyfully and with a great exuberance. Yet, also, they felt this portion of their own consciousness leave them and escape from them. So, to some extent, they cried to see a portion of themselves forever leave. Yet they did this that you might have existence and song.

And so, in this children’s tale that is given to you in parable and in symbol, you came to have your being. Yet when this universe as you know it was then brought into existence, you had to forget momentarily where you came from and you had to be created in flesh so that you could experience, in flesh, this new portion of creativity and so that you could, in your turn, create from that of which you were physically made.

So on purpose in a way, you forgot your heritage, and you found yourself upon a physical planet. All the stars blazed, and you opened your eyes and found infinite possibilities and a virgin physical reality that you could shape to your heart’s desire and in which you could give your creativity full rein. Those from whom you originated watched and, when great clouds scurried across your primitive skies in those days, the ones who had originated you came down, and you saw them and wondered.

And in this children’s tale, there were also, behind those who originated you, others who also watched carefully and gently and with great love. For, as you were created, so you create. Those thoughts of yours that you consider meaningless and that escape from you, these are also given vitality and existence, for you cannot help but create even as you have been created.

Now in this children’s tale, pretend with me. Pretend with me that you sit here in a physical reality in one tiny, unspeakably, and unutterably small dot upon the physical planet called Earth. Pretend with me that you are presently sitting in a room in a town called Elmira in a state called New York. That you are seated in a circle and that you are listening to me speak.

And pretend with me that, at the same time, you are in a circle about me in another space and another time. Pretend with me that, in your terms, we were in another circle and another star in a past so inconceivably distant that your physical brain cannot imagine it, and that together, being non-physical, we had a great dream, imagined a physical reality, and we imagined this moment and this time. There is no end to this children’s tale.

There is never any end to a children’s tale. It is only adults who insist upon beginnings and endings. Imagine also, therefore, that within yourselves now are other, far wiser selves and that within your eyes are other eyes as old as mine and other selves quite as ancient and quite as new, and that these selves, within yourselves, look out at me and wink, and in winking, know what they know.

Ruth, a class participant, said she was surprised to see Seth smiling.

Seth: It is within my rights. You have civil rights; I have smiling rights.

Now, I am glad you liked my children’s tale. I do want to give our friend (Jane) more of a break, but let me tell you that, in my own book, Seth Speaks – the Eternal Validity of the Soul, I am not using children’s tales. You have been given children’s tales too often. They are lovely and there is meaning in them, and you here should understand the meaning of the tale I gave you. But beneath the stories of the beginning, there are other things that you should know. In my own book, I will tell you what they are.

The intuitions and certain other inner abilities have so much more freedom here that it is unnecessary for molecules to be used in any imprisoning form.
Action in the dream world is more fluid.

The images appear and disappear much more quickly because value fulfillment is allowed greater reign.

The slower physical manifestation of growth that occurs within the physical system involves long-term patterns filled by atoms and molecules which are, to some extent, then imprisoned within the constructions.

In the dream world, the slower physical growth process is replaced by psychic and mental value fulfillment which does not necessitate any long-range imprisonment of molecules within a pattern.

This involves a quickening of experience and action that are relatively unhampered by the sort of time necessities inherent within the physical universe.

Action is allowed greater freedom. . . .

This is not to say that structure does not exist within the dream world, for structures of a mental and psychic nature do exist.

But structure is not dependent upon matter, and the motion of the molecules is more spontaneous. An almost unbelievable depth of experience is possible within what would seem to you a fraction of a moment.

One of the closest glimpses you can get of pure action is action as it is involved with the dream world and in this mobility as the personality passes into and out of the dream field.

Within the physical world, you deal with the transformation of action into physical manipulations — but this involves only a small portion of the nature of action, and it is my purpose to familiarize you with action as it exists, more or less, in pure form.

In this way, you will be able to perceive the ways in which it is translated into other fields of actuality that do not involve matter as you know it.

Within the reality of the dream world, fulfillment and dependence, then, are not dependent upon permanence in physical terms. Bursts of developments are possible that have matured in perspectives that are not bound up in time.

These developments are the result of actions that occur in many perspectives at once and not developments that happen as within the physical system through a seeming series of moments.

Basically, even the physical universe itself is so constructed, but for all practical purposes, as far as perception and experience is concerned, time and physical growth apply.

As a result, the ego portion of personality is, to a large extent, dependent for its maturity and development upon the amount of time that the physical image has spent within the system.

A certain portion of physical growth, in terms of a series of moments, is, therefore, necessary for value fulfillment to show itself within a physical organism.

But in the dream world, ‘growth’ is a matter of value fulfillment which is achieved through perspectives of action — through traveling within any given action, and following it and changing with it.

“The ego* is a very specialized portion of your greater identity. It is a portion of you that arises to deal directly with the life that the larger You is living. The ego can feel cut off, lonely and frightened, however, if the conscious mind lets the ego run away with it. The ego and the conscious mind are not the same thing. The ego is composed of various portions of the personality—it is a combination of characteristics, ever-changing, that act in unitary fashion – the portion of the personality that deals most directly with the world.”

* I see the outer portion of my larger self or ego (me) as the intermediary between the inner self, the body, and the world. Think about what it’s like for you to manage your life with its constantly growing list of roles and challenges. It’s a huge job and a great responsibility, not only for consciousness in human form but consciousness in any form. – Pete

“The conscious mind is an excellent perceiving attribute, a function that belongs to inner awareness but in this case, is turned outward toward the world of events. Through the conscious mind the soul looks outward. Left alone, it perceives clearly.

“In certain terms, the ego is the eye through which the conscious mind perceives, or the focus through which it views physical reality. But the conscious mind automatically changes its focus throughout life. The ego, while appearing the same to itself, ever changes. It is only when the conscious mind becomes rigid in its direction, or allows the ego to take on some of its own functions, that difficulties arise. Then the ego allows the conscious mind to work in certain directions and blocks its awareness in others.

And so it is from your larger identity that you form the reality that you know. It is up to you to do this with joy and vigor, clearing your conscious mind so that the deeper knowledge of your greater identity can form joyous expressions in the world of the flesh.”

“The living picture of the world grows within the mind. The world as it appears to you is like a three-dimensional painting in which each individual takes a hand. Each color, each line that appears within it has first been painted within a mind, and only then does it materialize without.

“In this case, however, the artists themselves are a portion of the painting, and appear within it. There is no effect in the exterior world that does not spring from an inner source. There is no motion that does not first occur within the mind.

“The great creativity of consciousness is your heritage. It does not belong to mankind alone, however. Each living being possesses it, and the living world consists of spontaneous cooperation that exists between the smallest and the highest, the greatest and the lowly, between the atoms and the molecules and the conscious, reasoning mind.

“All manner of insects, birds and beasts cooperate in this venture, producing the natural environment. This is as normal and inevitable as the fact that your breath causes a mist to form on glass if you breathe upon it. All consciousness creates the world, rising out of feeling-tone. It is a natural product of what your consciousness is. Feelings and emotions emerge into reality in certain specific ways. Thoughts appear, growing on the bed already laid. The seasons spring up, formed by ancient feeling-tones, having deep and abiding rhythms. They are the result, again, of innate creative aspects that are a portion of all life.

“These ancient aspects lie, now, deeply buried in the psyches of all species, and from them the individual patterns, the specific blueprints for new differentiations, emerge.

“The body of the earth can be said to have its own soul, or mind. Using this analogy the mountains and oceans, the valleys and rivers and all natural phenomena spring from the earth’s soul, as all events and all manufactured objects appear from the inner mind or soul of mankind.

“The inner world of each man and woman is connected with the inner world of the earth. The spirit becomes flesh. Part of each individual’s soul, then, is intimately connected with what we will call the world’s soul, or the soul of the earth.

“The smallest blade of grass, or flower, is aware of this connection, and without reasoning comprehends its position, its uniqueness and its source of vitality. The atoms and molecules that compose all objects, whether it be the body of a person, a table, a stone or a frog, know the great passive thrust of creativity that lies beneath their own existence, and upon which their individuality floats, distinct, clear and unassailable.

“So does the human individual rise up in victorious distinctiveness from the ancient and yet ever-new fountains of its own soul. The Self rises from unknowing into knowing, constantly surprising itself. As you read these sentences, for example, some of your knowledge is conscious knowing and is instantly available. Some is unconscious, but even the unconscious knowledge is knowing in its own unknowing.

“You always know what you’re doing, even when you don’t realize it. Your eye knows it sees, though it can’t see itself except through the use of reflection. In the same way the world as you see it is a reflection of what you are, a reflection not in glass but in three-dimensional reality. You project your thoughts, feelings, and expectations outward, then you perceive them as the outside reality. When it seems to you that others are observing you, you are observing yourself from the standpoint of your own projections.

“Now: You are the living picture of yourself. You project what you think you are outward into flesh. Your feelings and your conscious and unconscious thoughts, all alter and form your physical image.

“From The Nature of Personal Reality, Session 613

“Basically, you create your experience through your beliefs about yourself and the nature of reality. Another way to understand this is to realize that you create your experiences through your expectations. Your feeling-tones are your emotional attitudes toward yourself and life in general, and these generally govern the large areas of experience.

“They give the overall emotional coloration that characterizes what happens to you. Period. You are what happens to you. Your emotional feelings are often transitory, but beneath (them) there are certain qualities of feeling uniquely your own, that are like deep musical chords. While your day-to-day feelings may rise or fall, these characteristic feeling-tones lie beneath.

“Sometimes they rise to the surface, but in great long rhythms. You cannot call these negative or positive.

“They are instead tones of your being. They represent the most inner portion of your experience. This does not mean that they are hidden from you, or are meant to be. It simply means that they represent the core from which you form your experience.

“If you have become afraid of emotion or the expression of feeling, or if you have been taught that the inner self is no more than a repository of uncivilized impulses, then you may have the habit of denying this deep rhythm. You may try to operate as if it did not exist, or even try to refute it. But it represents your deepest, most creative impulses; to fight against it is like trying to swim upstream against a strong current.

These feeling-tones, then, pervade your being.

“They are the form your spirit takes when combined with flesh. From them, from their core, your flesh arises.

“Everything that you experience has consciousness, and each consciousness is endowed with its own feeling-tone. There is great cooperation involved in the formation of the earth as you think of it, and so the individual living structures of the planet rise up from the feeling-tone within each atom and molecule.

“Your flesh springs about you in response to these inner chords of your being, and the trees, rocks, seas and mountains spring up as the body of the earth from the deep inner chords within the atoms and molecules, which are also living. Because of the creative cooperation that exists, the miracle of physical materialization is performed so smoothly and automatically that consciously you are not aware of your part in it.

“The feeling-tone then is the motion and fiber—the timber—the portion of your energy devoted to your physical experience. Now it flows into what you are as a physical being and materializes you in the world of seasons, space, flesh, and time. Its source, however, is quite independent of the world that you know.

“Once you learn to get the feeling of your own inner tone, then you are aware of its power, strength and durability, and you can to some extent ride with it into deeper realities of experience.

“The incredible emotional richness and variety and splendor of physical experience is the material reflection of this inner feeling-tone. It pervades the events in your life, the overall inner direction, the quality of perception. If fills up and illuminates the individual aspects of your life, and largely determines the persuasive subjective climate in which you dwell.

“It is the essence of yourself. Its sweeps are broad in range, however. It does not determine, for example, specific events. (Pause.) It paints the colors in the large “landscape” of your experience. It is the feeling of yourself, inexhaustible.

“In other terms it represents the expression of yourself in the form of pure energy, from which your individuality rises. It is the You of you, unmistakably given identity that is never duplicated.

“This energy comes from the core of BEING, from All That Is, and represents the source of never-ending vitality. It is Being, Being in You. As such, all of the energy and power of Being is focused and reflected through you in the direction of your three-dimensional existence.

“While your feeling-tone is uniquely yours, still it is expressed in a certain fashion that is shared by all consciousnesses focused in physical reality. So in those terms you spring from the earth as all the other creatures and natural living structures. You are, while physical, a portion of nature, therefore, not apart from it.

“Trees and rocks possess their own consciousness, and also share a gestalt consciousness, even as the living portions of your body. The cells and organs have their own individual awareness, and a gestalt (or collective) one (as well). So the race of man also has individual consciousness and a gestalt or mass consciousness, of which you individually are hardly aware.

“The mass race consciousness, in its terms, possesses an identity. You are a portion of that identity while still being unique, individual and independent. You are confined only to the extent that you have chosen physical reality, and so placed yourself within its context of experience. While physical, you follow physical laws, or assumptions. These form the framework for corporeal expression.

“Within this framework you have full freedom to create your experience, your personal life in all of its aspects, the living picture of the world. Your personal life, and to some extent your individual living experience, help create the world as it is known in your time.

“In this book we will be speaking about your own subjective world, and your part in the creation of events both private and shared. It is important before we continue that you realize that consciousness is within all physical phenomena, however. It is vital that you realize your position within nature. Nature is created from within. The personal life that you know rises up from within you, yet it is given. Period. Since you are a part of Being, then in a certain fashion you give yourself the life that is being lived through you.

Now I have several things to say, and we will try to answer questions that you have in mind.

First of all, (to Rob) do not lose your sense of perspective, that larger perspective, that our work should give you. You are also involved in other realities and other experiments. There is more, and there are trends now in your own reality that you do not see.

Not only this, but even if the race as you know it distorts itself beyond belief, or even destroys itself, the many will not forget. The knowledge, hard won, would be as instinct when the race began again. The losers then would become
stern teachers, having learned through experience.

Each experiment is a success, regardless of whether it succeeds or fails in your terms, and each experiment also brings with it new elements of creativity, new innovations having appeared. These are retained.

There are various levels all operating, various levels of consciousness and identity. They cannot be forcibly restrained, for they would learn nothing. What they do learn, however, is always retained. This does not mean that each succeeding earth experiment will be made up of selves who have been through these cycles.

They may be personalities new to the system, new for that matter to any ideas, completely unused to conceptual thought or vision, beings only now emerging into strong individuality. Consciousness at your level is at a crisis point for many reasons.

Within your system, for the first time, individualized consciousness is strongly-enough organized to do, good or evil. Before that it was protected, somewhat coddled, with instinctual behavior holding it in bounds. It is not able to utilize enough energy to maintain a system of its own, but operates as an adjunct to other stronger systems.

Now some of those within your reality are having their first experience with an ego as you think of it. Others are returning to it, the system, in an effort lo learn more. There are guardians, so to speak, within your system, reincarnated for the last time to help keep it in some kind of order while the others mature. There are also some, not physical, who keep an eye out over the whole proceedings.

The training is necessary. The results at any given stage may not appear very hopeful, and in your terms there is indeed what seems to be a cumulative effect. There is a system of checks and balances that do operate. These exist within the inner selves. The system of checks and balances will operate up to a point, and maintain some stability.

There are alarm signals that trigger warnings through the entire physical reality. Disaster indeed shows itself within the dream state before it appears as physical fact.

Your ego is now focused within this reality. You have other egos focused in other realities. The inner self is aware of what is being done in all of these realities. There is some compensation, and the race knows this. Rubert (Jane Roberts’ greater self) wrote there were clumps of consciousness, and of course, he is correct. You are a part of many such clumps of consciousness. The abilities and potentials are not only being developed in this system but in others.

The race also realizes well the advantages and disadvantages of the physical reality it has adopted. It knows for example that there is a tendency to go to extremes. I mentioned earlier that the rewards, the challenges, and the dangers exist precisely because so much freedom is allowed.

Now. Those within the system know this. Regardless of what you think of their present performance at any given time it is from this system that the greatest potentials emerge; for having dealt with it, consciousness undergoes one of the severest tests in learning to handle its own energy.

The horror and the results of mismanagement, and the vulnerability, are the teaching methods that each consciousness has accepted before entering your system. There is no way out but to learn or to ruin the entire system. In no other field of reality are the terms so drastic. For this reason the inner self withholds much of its knowledge. There must be no leaning upon the very basic fact that behind and within the system there is relief. You must believe in physical reality and accept the vulnerability.

Now, from your system spring some of the most advanced of all identities. They go on and learn from other realities, granted, but yours is the hardest to manage, and those who accept it go off into a certain line of development where the potentials are beyond anything of which you can presently conceive.

I am telling you this not only because of your own earlier discussion, but also because this material will fit in with other sessions that I have in mind. You are not only ready for them but you are demanding them, and until you are ready you would not understand them.

First, quite simply, there are many who do not see those failings and shortcomings and trends of which you spoke earlier. They cannot be told; they learn. Alone they would not be permitted to destroy an entire reality. The mixture of consciousness within your system gives some control. The child must mature, and your system is a maturing ground, a very primary one. A beginning school for those who are trying out for particular kinds of experience. Some simply will not succeed. They will continue instead along other lines of development.

Now, you have quite literally put in your time, for centuries. This is one of the reasons that you find yourself very impatient with the development of your fellows who have not had that advantage as yet. You have learned. You cannot understand why they have not.

There are cycles of entry into your system. The first, mass entries do not give you war. Those entering are at first too bewildered. Manipulation within the physical universe is strange. They do not realize the potential of their own energy, and it is not until they begin to realize it that they are, led into temptation.

They have to learn to handle it constructively. Now cooperation is an innate feature to these entering selves. Without it they could not survive long enough to learn anything. The warlike periods do not begin until this group achieves some ability at manipulation. Now while it seems to you that there has been little advance, there has indeed, in the overall. Larger masses of individuals than ever before in this cycle realize that killing is wrong.

This cycle that I am speaking of goes back to the beginning of history as it is generally known, to your cavemen.

Now we will get on with some other subjects. But remember, you must consider the race and its inhabitants in the entire context of existence if you are to be realistic.

“In other words, portions of the inner self have joined the strictly egotistical functions. The ego in such cases is so attuned that it becomes almost something else. We are coming here to a definition of illumination in psychic terms. The ego is not banished. It joins with portions of the inner self previously unconscious, and illuminates the whole personality. It is no longer primarily physically oriented. Therefore it is no longer an ego in the terms usually meant.

“Again, this is an important point. The ego has accepted the goals of the inner self. Its identity has already changed, so that its main concern is no longer primarily with physical manipulation, but with inner growth and development.

“This does not mean that it ignores its earlier functions. In the true expansion of consciousness, you become more and more aware, more conscious of inner realities that were previously never realized on a conscious level. Since the ego is presently your main vehicle of consciousness, it will not be obliterated. It will indeed be resurrected. It simply changes not only its form, but its inner core, accepting as a part of itself realities which it previously ignored out of fear, ignorance (willful denial and suppression?), and insecurity.

“It becomes more and more a portion of the larger consciousness. Its new function is to help direct the overall personality so that inner abilities and illuminations can also reach the level of physical reality.”

“The body’s main purpose is not only to survive but to maintain a quality of existence that promotes health and fulfillment. Natural, biological fear alerts the body, and allows it to react completely and naturally. You might be reading a newspaper headline, for example, as you cross a busy street. Long before you’re consciously aware of the circumstances, your body might leap out of the path of an ap­proaching car. The body is doing what it is supposed to do. Though consciously you were not afraid, there was a biological, pertinent fear that was acted upon.

“If, however, you dwell mentally in a generalized environ­ment of fear, the body is given no clear line of action. It is allowed no appropriate response. Look at it this way: Animals, wild and domesticated, react to immediate threats in a certain fashion, and are alert to everything in their environment. A cat does not anticipate danger from a penned dog four blocks away nor, does it wonder what will happen if the dog escapes and finds the cat’s cozy yard.

“Many people, however, don’t pay attention to everything in their immediate environment. As a result of their beliefs, they concentrate only upon “the ferocious dog four blocks away.” They don’t respond to real or potential threats in front of them. Instead, they dwell upon threats that may or may not exist or directly affect them.

“When the mind signals a threat that is nowhere physically present or perceivable, the body cannot clearly respond. It therefore reacts to a pseudo-threatening situation, and is caught in between gears, so to speak, with resulting biological confusion. The body’s responses must be specific.

“Your overall sense of health, vitality, and resiliency is a generalized condition of contentment—brought about by multitudinous specific responses. Left alone, your body can defend itself against any disease, but it cannot defend itself appropriately against an exaggerated general fear of disease on your part. It must mirror your own feelings and assessments.

“Your entire medical system literally generates as much disease as it cures – for you are everywhere hounded by the symptoms of various diseases and filled with the fear of disease. You are overwhelmed by what seems to be the body’s propensity toward illness—and no­where is the body’s vitality or natural defense system stressed. Private disease, then, happens also in a social context. This context is the result of personal and mass beliefs that are inter­twined at all cultural levels and, to that extent, serve private and public purposes.

“The illnesses generally attributed to all different ages are involved. Those of the elderly, again, fit in with your social and cultural beliefs and the structure of your family life. Old animals have their own dignity, and so should old men and women. Senility is a mental and physical epidemic—a needless one. You “catch” it because when you are young you believe that old people cannot perform. There are no inoculations against beliefs, so when young people with such beliefs grow old they become “victims.”

“The kinds of diseases change through historical periods. Some become fashionable while others go out of style. All epidemics, however, are mass statements both biologically and psychologically. They point to mass beliefs that have brought about certain physical coalitions that are abhorrent at all levels. They often go hand-in­-hand with war, and represent biological protests.

“Whenever the conditions of life are such that its quality is threatened, there will be such a mass statement. The quality must be at a certain level so that the individuals of a species-of any and all species-can develop. In your species the spiritual, mental, and psychic abilities add a dimension that is biologically pertinent.

“There simply must be a freedom to express ideas. There must be an individual tendency and a worldwide social and political context in which each individual can develop his or her abilities and contribute to the species as a whole. This climate depends upon many ideas that are not now universally accepted. However, the species is so formed that the biological importance of ideas cannot be stressed too strongly.

“More and more, the quality of your lives is formed through the subjective realities of your feelings and mental constructions. Again, beliefs that foster despair are biologically destructive. They cause the physical system to shut down. If mass action against appalling social or political conditions is not effective, then other means are taken, and these are often in the guise of epidemics or natural disasters. The blight is wiped out in one way or another.

“Such conditions are the result of beliefs, which are mental, and so the most vital work must always be done in that area.”
