Lakota Prayer

“Teach me how to trust my heart, my mind, my intuition, my inner knowing, the senses of my body and the blessings of my spirit. Teach me to trust these things so that I may enter my sacred space and love beyond my fear, and thus, walk in balance with the passing of each glorious sun.”

(“From the history of the Indians on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota from 1890 to the present.” Posted Online by Chris McGreal, the Guardian’s Washington correspondent.)

In a comparative and competitive psychological environment of I’m right, you’re wrong, I’m good, you’re bad, I win, you lose, reinforced by the shame of guilt and the fear of punishment, how do you “love beyond your fear, and thus, walk in balance with the passing of each glorious sun?” This is a great question and one I’ve been wrestling with for a long time since I first decided I want to become more of who I am, not less.  – Pete
